Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 315-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.


The Burn Surgery Physician Assistant focuses on surgery patients both in the hospital and in outpatient care. The scope of the patients may include but not be limited to: acute burn, burn reconstruction, aesthetics, breast reconstruction, hand, maxillofacial, burn and general reconstruction surgeries. The focus of the Physician Assistant is the provision of restorative, curative, rehabilitative, palliative, and maintenance care. The role of the Physician Assistant would include application of diagnostic reasoning; specialized psychomotor skills in the performance of procedures; evaluation; consultation; referral to nurses, physicians, and other providers; family assessment; education; and provision for discharge planning or disposition.  Key elements of the role include:

  • Advanced clinical expertise in burn care for both inpatient and outpatient services
  • Development of differential diagnoses
  • Use of medical reasoning to formulate the plan of care
  • Order and prescription of pharmacological and other therapeutic therapy
  • Planning and management of patient care across the acute care continuum
  • Utilization and performance of invasive and non-invasive interventions and procedures to promote physiologic stability      or obtain diagnostic information
  • Surveillance of care
  • Accountability and authority for managing patient care outcomes across settings and boundaries
  • Advocacy or patient agency
  • Clinical leadership
  • Managing and negotiating healthcare delivery systems on behalf of the patient and family
  • Influencing changes as patients and system needs demand
  • Promotion of health
  • Providing care with an awareness that each patient is unique


  • Rounds with team and collaborates with Team Faculty to implement treatment plan
  • Contributes to the medical record with reference to order entry, admission H/P, discharges, daily progress notes and other dictations as assigned
  • Follows status of patients admitted to service, facilitating discharge and return clinic visits
  • Responds to service calls when physicians are in surgery 
  • Functions as the point person for inpatient and outpatient consultations
  • Provides full coverage to burn surgery inpatient and outpatient services
  • Provides some cross coverage to plastic surgery patients as directed by collaborating physician
  • Utilizes specialized knowledge and expertise to facilitate professional care to patients
  • Through five primary roles of expert clinician, consultant, educator, researcher, and leader, strives for improved patient care focusing on positive outcomes and cost effectiveness.  This includes modeling for staff aspects of professional practice, problem solving, decision-making and critical thinking skills.
  • Maintains clinical skills requirements based on collaborating physician agreement and demonstrated competency as evidenced through training or check off by collaborating physician
