ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for client care in the area of assignment
  • Works under the authority of the medical control physician and/or according to the Reuben Engagement Center guidelines and protocols
  • Responsible and accountable for maintaining controlled medications (narcotics)
  • Document physically in writing or by approved electronic means all relevant information in a prescribed format
  • Maintains the safety and security of clients, staff, equipment and supplies
  • Provides for various client needs in support of the client care team: assists or provides for client hygiene needs, providing bed linen changes and maintaining organized and clean client/unit environment.
  • Ensures equipment being used is clean, reports needed repairs; replenishes supplies in areas as needed
  • Observes, recognizes and reports changes in client behavior
  • Reinforces client mental orientation to person, place and time
  • Complete intake assessment with clients
  • Participates in healthcare team approach for clients in accordance with policy/procedure and established protocols. May perform or assist with:
    • limited respiratory treatments which may include O2 titration/oximetry, aerosols, IPPD/PPD, multi-dose inhaler treatments, sputum cultures, ABGs
    • phlebotomy procedures (i.e. venipuncture, capillary sticks)
    • medication administration, starting IV-DCs
    • Accuchecks
    • trach care/ostomy care
    • neuro/vascular checks
    • applying ACE wrapping
    • taking vital signs and client weights
    • client personal care

ASSOCIATED JOB DUTIES:

  • May function alone or as a member of a multi-member team
  • Takes safety precautions to protect the sick, injured and those assisting in the care of the client(s)
  • Using body substance isolation techniques protects the client(s), self, and other providers from possible contamination
  • Determines the nature and extent of illness or injury, and based on assessment findings, renders emergency care to clients while awaiting transport to hospital to include managing airway and ventilations of clients to include BLS and ALS airways as indicated, cardiac monitoring, 12 lead EKG tracings and interprets results
  • Manages medical clients to include but not limited to: management of respiratory, cardiac, diabetic, allergic, behavioral, and environmental emergencies and suspected poisonings and overdoses
  • Perform approved intervention and assist the client while reassuring client by working in a confident and efficient manner
  • Performs in situations that create stress and tension on a regular basis
  • Disposes of contaminated supplies in accordance with established guidelines, decontaminates the area and reusable goods
  • Maintains work environment in appropriate conditions, which includes cleanliness, orderliness and prompt restocking of equipment and supplies
  • Attends continuing educations and refresher courses and training programs as required by medical direction, or certifying agency
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Required License/Certifications:
    • Active Indiana Paramedic License OR Active Indiana Registered Nurse License
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification
  • American Heart Association CPR Certification
  • For Registered Nurse, graduation from an accredited professional school/college of nursing and a minimum of six months of supervised broad clinical experience (i.e. medical/surgical, geriatric, and psychiatric) required
  • For Paramedic, minimum of 1 year experience preferred
  • Continuing education to maintain required certifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Basic skills in client care delivery, equipment and instrument usage appropriate to assigned area
  • Knowledge of practical skills, theory and medical terminology
  • Skill in use of respiratory care equipment (i.e. oxygen devices, ventilators, invasive monitors, etc.)
  • Knowledge of the following:
    • cardiopulmonary anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology and basic respiratory care techniques and modalities
    • intravenous therapy, peripheral lines and venesection
    • endotracheal intubation, cricothyrotomy, pleural decompression, cardiac monitoring, interpretation, defibrillation and cardioversion
    • medications to include use of I.V. and sub-Q; medications to include correct dosages and usage for adult and geriatric client population
    • disease symptoms, conditions, treatments, trauma and aseptic techniques
  • Good interpersonal communication skills; accurate reading/recording of information
  • Ability to follow oral/written instructions, communicate/work effectively with a wide variety of people and clients of all ages
  • Must function effectively in stressful or crisis situations, accurately read/record data, be flexible to changing work priorities, assist in assessing and responding to client needs
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of clients served
  • Ability to use appropriate communication skills and cognitive abilities, skills and techniques as required in department-specific competencies
  • Basic skills in delivery of client care, use of equipment and instruments appropriate to assigned unit

SPECIAL EFFORT REQUIRED:

  • Mentally capable of processing information quickly, solving problems and making decisions
  • Demonstrates flexibility in response to changing situations, workload and/or client assignments
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs
  • Must be able to respond immediately to emergency situations in unit; must be able to assist in the evacuation of clients via stairwell
  • Physical stamina, considerable walking, standing, lifting/moving of clients
  • Ability to perform duties and respond effectively in stressful environment and situations (mentally and physically)
  • Must be able to stand and walk about for 6 to 8 hours at a time
  • Must be able to squat, stoop, bend, twist and kneel in order to meet client needs and/or in order to work with client equipment
  • Must be able to arrive at work during severe weather conditions
  • Must be able to participate in CPR on appropriate populations and other technical skills requiring lifting and turning
  • Must be able to safely position clients independently
  • Must be able to remain awake and alert at all times
  • Must be able to use both hands, wrists, arms and both legs simultaneously; may not work with “devices” (i.e., splints/casts) that limit ability to perform duties or impede hand washing
