Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 315-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

The Burn Nurse Practitioner focuses on burn patients both in the hospital and in outpatient care. The scope of burn surgery patients may include but not be limited to: acute care, burn reconstruction, complex wound management, burn rehabilitation with an emphasis on outpatient care and clinic functions.  

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Rounds with team and collaborates with Team Faculty to implement treatment plan
  • Follows status of patients admitted to service, facilitating discharge and return clinic visits
  • Responds to service calls when physicians are in surgery
  • Functions as the point person for inpatient and outpatient consultations
  • Provides some cross coverage to burn surgery services between inpatient and outpatient services as needed
  • Utilizes specialized knowledge and expertise to facilitate professional care to patients
  • Through five primary roles of expert clinician, consultant, educator, researcher, and leader, strives for improved patient care focusing on positive outcomes and cost effectiveness.  This includes modeling for staff aspects of professional practice, problem solving, decision-making and critical thinking skills.
  • Maintains clinical skills requirements based on collaborating physician agreement and demonstrated competency as evidenced through training or check off by collaborating physician
  • Clinical Practice:

°         Role models excellence in clinical practice and patient assessment to promote improvement in patient care

°         Serves as a resource for all health care providers in the coordination and management of patient care and outcomes

°         Intervenes with complex patients or populations in areas of expertise to develop appropriate plans of care to achieve optimal patient outcomes

°         Develops critical thinking skills in nursing staff to positively impact patient outcomes

°         Impacts patient care indirectly by developing, implementing and evaluating standards of care, clinical practice guidelines, polices and procedures, and through involvement in practice committees

°         Coordinates the development of patient management tools (pathways, protocols) based on research findings

°         Utilizes principles of performance improvement process to improve patient care

°         Maintains a flexible schedule to meet the needs of patients, staff and system

°         May utilize prescriptive authority according to the Indiana statute and institutional guidelines

°         Participates and/or runs routine clinics and completes clinic notes in a timely manner with any necessary billing and clinic charge sheets

°         Maintains patient photodocumentation as it relates to burn clinics

°         Maintains follow-up on pending labs and tests ordered for patients

°         Assists and coordinates preadmission testing for surgical burn patients

°         Assists in preoperative and postoperative management of patients to include facilitation of patient throughput in the system

  • Education:

°         Conducts one-on-one patient and family teaching to facilitate adherence to the plan of care, promotes a positive outcome and develops patient independence

°         Develops and implements educational material

°         Contributes to professional nursing literature

  • Consultation:

°         Provides consultative services to health team members in conjunction with collaborating physicians and resident teams

  • Research:

°         Critiques pertinent research literature related to specialty areas and promotes research utilization to improve patient care

°         Participates in research and clinical trials as needed under collaborative physician direction

°         Designs product evaluations and implements the findings with attention to cost-effectiveness

  • Leadership/Management:

°         Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of departmental and institutional mission and goals; serves as a role model, mentor and change agent for health care providers

°         Uses innovative techniques to effectively manage hospital resources to positively impact patient outcomes in a cost-effective manner

°         Alters activities/behaviors to reflect/ensure adequate care; maintains age and job- specific competencies appropriate to the age of patients served (i.e. adolescent, geriatric, pediatric, neonatal, adult) described in the area/unit age specific and/or job specific competencies

   SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • Ability to assess system and patients' needs and function autonomously to develop and implement programs to improve patient care
  • Ability to collaborate with other health care team members to enhance patient care across the continuum
  • Demonstrates leadership abilities by serving as a mentor to influence patient outcomes
  • Ability to conduct product, program and/or process value analysis including complete financial implications involved in implementation of the product or program
  • Ability to review/critique pertinent research literature related to specialty areas and promotes research utilization to improve patient care
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills related to team development, group process conflict management and negotiations
  • Possesses knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data/interpret appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to age-specific needs.
  • Ability to use age-appropriate and cognitive skills detailed in the department/area/unit job specific/age specific competencies

 SKILLS, ABILITIES AND KNOWLEDGE TYPICALLY ACQUIRED THROUGH:

 Graduation from an accredited school of nursing with a Master of Science degree

  • Current Indiana license as a Registered Nurse or current registration with another State Board of Nursing followed by immediate registration with the Indiana Board  of Nurse Examiners for license endorsement
  • Expertise in the practice of nursing validated by five years of current clinical practice, including two years in the area of specialty practice and/or as nurse practitioner
  • Collaborative agreement with affiliated physician group
  • Credentialing agreement with Wishard Health Services within 6 months of hire  
  • Current Indiana Controlled Substance and Drug Enforcement Registration if required by department

CONTACTS-INTERNAL/EXTERNAL:

  • Continuous contact with patients, visitors, health team members, departmental personnel to provide/obtain services for patients
  • Frequent external contacts with patients, families, healthcare, social service agencies to obtain/provide information, to make referrals or consult

RESPONSIBILITY:

 Maintains patient and family confidentiality

  • Maintains protected health information in accordance with HIPAA privacy guidelines and regulations
  • Maintains privilege and credentialing processes
  • Provides feedback regarding staff performance and clinical competencies to appropriate management and may exercise direct supervision as needed
  • Maintains patient rights, providing significant information concerning clinical practice work assignments, and performance      evaluations
  • Serves as preceptor and educates staff in formal and informal presentations

SPECIAL EFFORT REQUIRED: 

  • Physical stamina, considerable walking, standing, lifting/moving of patients
  • Able to perform duties and effectively respond in stressful environment/situations, mentally and physically
  • Care or effort to avoid injury and infection
  • Must be mentally capable of processing information quickly
  • Demonstrates flexibility in response to changing situation, workload and/or patient assignments
  • Must be able to lift 20 to 30 lbs. (patients and/or equipment, including overhead)
  • Must be able to push and/or pull 20 to 30 lbs. (patients and/or patient equipment)
  • Must be able to respond immediately to/move quickly in emergency situations in unit and hospital
  • May not work with devices that limit ability to perform duties or impede hand washing
  • Must be able to stand and walk approximately 6 to 8 hours at a time
  • Must be able to squat, stoop, bend, twist and kneel in order to meet patients' needs and/or in order to work with      patient equipment
  • Must be able to arrive at work during severe weather conditions (snow, wind, hail, thunderstorms, dust, and extreme heat/cold)
  • Responsible to make interventions with respect to job assignments to aid in patient safety and to report patient safety      concerns to supervisor or manager
  • Must be able to participate in CPR
