The Medical Transport Aide-EMT is responsible for the following essential job functions:

    • Transports patients to and from diagnostic procedures and tests 
    • Maintains clean and efficient equipment; cleans wheelchairs and stretchers after each use with disinfectant; reports defective/broken equipment to supervisor
    • Assists with wheelchair locating and round-up
    • Lifts patients onto/out of wheelchairs, stretchers, beds, etc., using the patient lift when possible
    • Responsible for transporting patients to rehab facilities, nursing homes, home and other hospitals
    • Provides emergency medical care at the basic and advanced life support level according to Ambulance Service practices and policies, established protocols, verbal and written orders and state regulations
    • Monitors patients while in transport
    • Changes activities and behavior to ensure adequate age-appropriate care (i.e. neo-natal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric)
    • Provides clear verbal information via communication systems as required
    • Performs heavy and awkward lifting of patients in difficult areas and terrain
    • Maintains the safety and security of the vehicle and equipment; assists the medical transport supervisors in checking and maintaining vehicle equipment and supplies
    • Prepares accurate and legible records, logs and reports; provides medical reports to hospital staff all in a timely manner
    • Responsible for patients' personal property
    • Supervises and directs the activities and educational/clinical experiences of assigned observers and students
    • Participates actively in continuing education and medical audit programs


    • High School Diploma or equivalent
    • Current Indiana Drivers license with motor vehicle record that meets Eskenazi Health's driving policy
    • Current Indiana motor vehicle insurance
    • Must obtain EVOC Defensive Driving Course Certification within 6 months of employment
    • AHA CPR Certification
    • Indiana certification as an Emergency Medical Technician-Ambulance
