Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 315-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.



JOB SUMMARY:

The Medical Assistant II provides patient care which takes into account patient response to care provided, patient needs, problems, capabilities, limitations, and progress toward goals. The Medical Assistant alters activities/behaviors to ensure adequate care appropriate to the age of patients served (i.e., pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric).



ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Proactively contributes to Eskenazi Health's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable populations of Marion County; models Eskenazi values
  • Helps maintain clinic flow; maintains a safe patient/clinic environment and ensures practice is in compliance with Eskenazi’s safety standards
  • Demonstrates good communication skills using appropriate medical terminology
  • Exhibits legal and ethical professional conduct, follows organizational/site-specific protocols/processes
  • Provides patient care which takes into account patient response to care provided, patient needs, problems, capabilities, limitations, and progress toward goals; alters activities/behaviors to ensure adequate care appropriate to the age of patients served (i.e., pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric)
  • Integrates cultural/population specific diversity needs into patient care as well as integrating physiological, psychological and cultural needs
  • Measures and records vital signs, heights, weights, other parameters including pain assessment
  • Interviews patient and records history, chief complaint, other findings
  • Calls prescriptions (except Schedule II medications) to pharmacy for the provider per written orders
  • Prepares patients for examinations and performs routine screening tests including EKGs
  • Assists provider with exams and minor office procedures
  • Collects and processes lab specimens including phlebotomy
  • Monitors follow-up of tests and lab studies and notifies provider
  • Performs point-of-care testing, including pertinent quality control testing, documenting results
  • Prepares and administers medications (with exceptions per organizational or site-specific guidelines) with provider written order
  • Demonstrates competence/accountability in the administration of medications, treatments, performing tests
  • Changes/applies dressings, removes sutures, other minor procedures
  • Performs CPR when needed
  • Accurately, legibly, legally documents findings, services provided (including medication administration), education/instructions given, completes other required documentation
  • Cleans rooms after each patient exam
  • Answers phones/makes phone calls as needed/directed
  • Operates standard office equipment
  • Schedules appointments
  • Maintains supplies and equipment (stocking/ordering) including routine stocking of exam rooms
  • Maintains required certifications (organizationally and as required by site)
  • Assists with the orientation of other staff members including Medical Assistant Externs
  • Must sit together with Clinical Team



ASSOCIATED JOB DUTIES:

  • Completes registration forms/registration process
  • May make arrangements for hospital admissions and outside referrals for the provider per written order
  • May provide patient/family education regarding procedures/processes, medications, disease management, home treatment, and special diets, utilizing other disciplines/resources as needed/required; documents education and evidence of patient/family understanding
  • Functions effectively as a team member and responds to change in a constructive manner
  • Utilizes sound judgment to recognize level of urgency and responds appropriately
  • Sees problems through to conclusion even in stressful patient interactions
  • Adjusts own workload to support co-workers in meeting patient needs
  • Continuously learns about topics related to the position via reading latest literature, attend classes, observes procedures, asks questions
  • Works efficiently during down times to keep work flowing
  • Provides suggestions to improve department efficiencies
  • Anticipates problems and informs physician in advance
  • Performs all other job-related duties as assigned



JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graduation from an education program for the medical assistant required
  • Certification or Registration as a medical assistant required; Five years of medical assistant experience may be accepted in lieu of CMA/RMA
  • Minimum of two years of medical assistant experience required for candidates with CMA/RMA
  • CPR certification (American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR certification is preferred)
  • Current TB Education certification is preferred

  • Maintains patient and family confidentiality
  • Maintains protected health information in accordance with HIPAA privacy guidelines and regulations

CONTACTS – INTERNAL/EXTERNAL:

  • Contact with all levels of Eskenazi Health employees, management and clinical staff
  • Contact with patients and families
  • Contact with outside vendors, agencies and/or institutions as required to perform the essential functions of the role



SPECIAL EFFORT REQUIRED:

  • Physical stamina required for considerable walking, standing, and physically assisting patients; must be able to squat, stoop, bend, twist, kneel, and reach above head in order to meet patient needs/work with patient equipment
  • Flexibility required in response to changing situations, workloads, assignments, and priorities
  • Ability to perform duties and effectively respond in stressful environments and situations
  • Willingness and ability to wear/use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Willingness and ability to report to work during severe weather conditions



WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Patient care areas, clinics, nursing offices, clinical office environment
  • May be required to attend meetings or perform work remote from clinic or hospital campus
  • Exposure to communicable diseases, infections, pathogens—required to use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as applicable
  • Risk of injury from lifting/moving patients or equipment or combative persons
