Job Role SummaryThe Senior Staff Accountant I position provides a strategic perspective to the finance transactions of the organization. It requires an understanding of accounting practices, their impact on the results of the organization and the ability to provide realistic judgment and interpretation of the day-to-day transactions. Senior Staff Accountant responsibilities include reconciling account balances and bank statements, maintaining general ledger and preparing month-end close procedures. A successful Senior Staff Accountant combines excellent analytical skills with a thorough knowledge of accounting principles to analyze financial reports and forecasts. Senior Staff Accountant duties also include ensuring accuracy and effectiveness in all of our accounting tasks.
Essential Functions and ResponsibilitiesPrepares necessary monthly and one-time journal entriesResponsible for reconciliation of balance sheet accounts as assignedResponsibilities may include grant accountingResponsibilities may include bank reconciliationsAnalyzes and reports on any variances of budget to actual expenses May be required to assist in the preparation of preliminary financial statementsPrepares supplementary financial schedule as requestedReconciles and creates monthly schedules in accordance with month end checklistProvides backup for other accounting functions as requiredAssists PFS to identify/account for non-routine cash payments and other problemsWill assist in ad hoc reporting as needed
Job RequirementsCompletion of Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance from an accredited college or university plus two years of experience as a Staff Accountant at Eskenazi Health or at least two years of hospital accounting experienceWorking experience in SAP system preferable
Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesDemonstrated skill in using calculator, personal computer, advanced computerized spreadsheet knowledge and standard office equipment, organizational and supervisory skillsKnowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and health care account relationships, laws governing not-for-profit financial activities, SAP system (AP, PO, general ledger, payroll, inventory control) and related softwareAbility to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, analyze/interpret financial data, work accurately and independently under deadlines and apply decisions related to the financial data recording/analysis/presentationAbility to maintain general accounting regulations knowledge plus health care and governmental accounting requirements, adhere to the standard Hospital operating procedures related to financial accounting
