Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 327-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

The Trauma Education/Outreach Coordinator provides educational project management services for new and existing trauma initiatives and develops programs to ensure competencies for all levels of nursing staff in all clinical areas that care for trauma patients. This position reports to the Trauma Program Manager and the Director of Trauma Services.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Proactively contributes to Eskenazi Health's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County; models Eskenazi Health's values
  • Responsible for the planning, organization, implementation and evaluation of all trauma education for the Smith Level I Shock Trauma Center
  • Coordinates and implements trauma-related courses for nursing staff and physician staff
  • Provides educational project management services for new and existing trauma initiatives and develops programs to ensure competencies for all levels of nursing staff in all clinical areas that care for trauma patients
  • Ensures all trauma education programs include essential components to guide and develop staff to achieve clear outcomes; develops or implements content outlines; monitors quality materials, appropriate methodology and program evaluations
  • Develops and meets goals related to hospital strategic initiatives, functions and services as it relates to nursing staff and physician staff education
  • Ensures programs meet regulatory requirements, strategic initiatives, and support PI and QC needs
  • Provides consultative expertise regarding development and/or assessment of departmental competency programs
  • Effectively manages resources, to include time management, prioritizing, planning and scheduling; participates in budget development and monitoring for trauma courses
  • Demonstrates effectiveness for communication of instructional design and presentation skills
  • Collaborates with appropriate departmental heads to meet program outcomes and established goals for Trauma Education and ACS requirements for Level I Trauma Center verification
  • Promotes and maintains IMPACT award program
  • Works with local and state EMS agencies to coordinate and implement training, and to provide patient care feedback
  • Coordinates all EMS student Trauma Clinicals at Eskenazi Health
  • Works with Public Affairs Liaison to promote Trauma Services at Community and EMS events
  • Maintains records of events attended and education and outreach provided quarterly; provides data to Public Affairs


Job Requirements

  • Active RN license in the State of Indiana, or the ability to obtain active licensure through application
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred
  • CPR, ACLS, TNCC certifications required
  • Instructor status in TNCC and ENPC preferred
  • Current TCRN, CEN or CCRN (if not current upon hire, must obtain with 2 years of hire date)
  • Five years of clinical nursing experience at a Level I or Level II Trauma Center


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of trauma educational requirements as it relates to hospital programs such as American College of Surgeons requirements for Level I Trauma Center verification, Joint Commission, State Board of Health, OSHA
  • Ability to consult and teach departments regarding age-appropriate and cultural needs of trauma patients
  • Expertise in competency assessment, educational programming, delivery methodology
  • Ability to function independently; possesses strong decision making and problem solving skills
  • Exhibits effective interpersonal relations, conflict resolution, education, organizational, and planning skills
  • Exhibits strong history of skill development and learning to maintain expertise
  • Maintains expertise in those areas programmatically responsible for core trauma clinical practices, trauma protocols, patient safety, clinical policies, procedures and programs
