JOB SUMMARY:

The Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic responds in emergency vehicle to the scene of reported medical emergencies, as directed by communications center. This position manages, supervises and is responsible for all aspects of patient’s emergency care by providing efficient and immediate basic and advanced life support at the scene, in transport, and in the emergency room. This position provides emergency medical care at the basic and advanced life support level according to Indianapolis EMS practices, policies, and established protocols.



ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Responds in emergency vehicle to the scene of reported medical emergencies, as directed by communications center or instructions from a District Lieutenant or Operations Commander
  • Manages, supervises and is responsible for all aspects of patient’s emergency care by providing efficient and immediate basic and advanced life support at the scene, in transit to the emergency room in accordance with policies, procedures, and protocols
  • Provides specific medical care in conjunction with physician, nursing and allied health staff in the hospital in accordance with established practices and protocol
  • Calculates drip rates and drug concentrations, renders appropriate approved intravenous drugs or fluid replacement as indicated by online medical direction and/or established EMS Protocols. 
  • Document in writing or by approved electronic means all relevant information in a prescribed format (I.E. Run Report, ESO Report)
  • Responsible and accountable for maintaining controlled medications (narcotics)
  • Drives an emergency vehicle under emergent and non - emergent conditions
  • Exercises independent judgment in critical, emergency situations
  • Coordinates public safety personnel in emergency situations
  • Attends continuing education, refresher courses, medical audit programs and training programs as required by IEMS, medical direction, or certifying agency
  • Participates actively in continuing education and medical audit programs



ASSOCIATED JOB DUTIES:

  • May function alone or as a member of a team
  • Supervises and directs the activities and educational/clinical experiences of assigned observers and students
  • Safely operate in and around emergency equipment
  • Protects the patient(s), self, and other providers from possible contamination
  • Takes safety precautions to protect the injured and those assisting in the care of the patient(s)
  • Complies with regulations for the handling of crime scenes and prehospital deaths by notifying the appropriate authorities and arranging for protection of property and evidence at the scene
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned



JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Indiana Paramedic License
  • Valid Driver’s License - must meet and remain in compliance with IEMS driver eligibility policy
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification
  • American Heart Association CPR Certification
  • Emergency Vehicle Operator Certification
  • Continuing education to maintain required certifications



SPECIAL EFFORT REQUIRED:

  • Lift up to 125 lbs. equally distributed and up to 250 lbs. with assistance
  • Heavy lifting for sustained periods; heavy and awkward lifting of patients and/or equipment over difficult terrain for several yards; intense strain for short periods of time
  • Drive an emergency vehicle under emergency conditions and non-emergent conditions
  • Carry a stair chair 30 yards, up two flights of stairs, then down two flights of stairs with a patient attached
  • Carry tech box, oxygen equipment bag and ECG monitor up two flights of stairs
  • Kneel, stoop, bend, crawl, walk and crouch for extended periods of time, on uneven surfaces and confined spaces, including kneeling long enough to perform two hundred chest compressions in 2 minutes
