Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 315-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.



JOB SUMMARY:

The Instrument Technician/CRCST is responsible for the efficient supply, storage, maintenance and working order of all instruments used in all surgical areas.



ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Specializes in decontamination, assembly, and sterilization of instrumentation
  • Decontaminates, assembles and sterilizes instruments according to manufacturer guidelines
  • High level disinfects specialty instrumentation or devices according to manufacturer’s guidelines
  • Uses detergents/disinfectant solutions to decontaminate surgical instruments, power equipment, scopes, cameras, light cords, and procedural instruments
  • Assembles and packages instrumentation in sets and/or single instrument peel-packs; ensures sets are counted and complete for terminal sterilization
  • Operates steam autoclave, plasma sterilizer, automated scope reprocessor, ultrasonic, washer-decontaminator, and sanitizing machines
  • Responsible for efficient supply, storage, maintenance and working order of all instruments used in all surgical areas
  • Actively participates in in-service programs for information regarding new or revised procedures, hospital safety and infection control policies and any other information pertinent to daily assignments in the Sterile Processing Department

  • Performs other job related duties as assigned



JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of high school or equivalent (GED)
  • CRCST certification
  • In lieu of above certification, a minimum of 2 years previous related work experience or clinical experience at Eskenazi Health will be accepted; must obtain CRCST certification within 6 months of employment
  • Heartsaver AED required within 6 months of hire

KILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Organization and leadership skills and ability to communicate effectively with all levels of departmental/interdepartmental personnel
  • Good physical condition is important as some tasks require heavy lifting
  • Ability to use age appropriate communication skills
  • Thorough knowledge of hospital sterile techniques/principles, which are used in preparation, sterilizing, packaging, distribution, and receiving and storage of sterile supplies



RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Responsible for following all detailed steps of sterilization, decontamination, packaging, and distribution of clean/sterile supplies, and instrumentation.  Failure to do so could result in hospital caused infections.  Must use equipment in a manner to prevent injury to self, co-workers, and hospital employees. 
  • Maintains patient and family confidentiality
  • Maintains protected health information in accordance with HIPAA privacy guidelines and regulations



JUDGMENT:

  • Employee may work under general supervision and receives general guidance on work priority with substantial employee latitude



CONTACTS – INTERNAL/EXTERNAL:

  • Daily contacts with nurses, surgical technologists, and physicians to provide special surgical instruments/information concerning various instruments   



SPECIAL EFFORT REQUIRED:

  • Extreme care and accuracy in following sterilization procedures adhering to AAMI and AORN standards and manufacturer guidelines and manufacturer guidelines  to achieve quality results to prevent spread of infection and delays of surgical procedures
  • Operates electrical and mechanical equipment, adhering to AAMI and AORN standards and manufacturer guidelines to achieve quality results and avoid personal harm to self or others, including cleaning and sterilization processes
  • Considerable amount of walking, bending, pushing, pulling, stooping, standing, and lifting of moderate to heavy items required to perform job assignments; must be able to lift/carry a minimum of 25 pounds
  • Ensures quantity and quality of items processed are sufficient to meet user demand
  • Errors could result in delay of surgeries if materials are not ready on time; or infections to patients if all procedures are not followed
  • Responsible for accurately selecting instrumentation for scheduled surgical procedures and maintaining efficiency
  • Good judgment is required in decisions made daily in selection of instruments for each case; which instruments require repair; determining need for replacement
  • Patient’s life could be jeopardized if wrong instruments are selected; if response time is too long, if supply replacement or efficiency of instruments do not conform with prescribed standards
  • Extreme caution must be used when operating steam sterilizers, to avoid hazards of contaminated surgical instruments, needles, knife blades, or lifting heavy instrument sets.  Carelessness would result in personal injury to self and possibly other personnel       



WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Duties performed in SPD with daily contact with contaminated, clean, and sterile supplies and equipment.  Exposure to high temperature steam sterilizers and toxic solvents
  • Frequent prolonged standing/walking
  • Patient care areas
  • May be required to attend meetings or perform work remote from clinic or hospital campus
