Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 327-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

The Behavioral Health Regulatory & Risk Manager coordinates the identification of situations, practices, or policies that pose risk to harm to Behavioral Health clients, employees, physicians, volunteers, or visitors and works to facilitate strategies to reduce those risks. They participate in Behavioral Health committees as needed to assure that risk management/client safety issues are identified and/or resolved.



Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Assists in the development and implementation of effective medical error reduction strategies in the division of Behavioral Health.
  • Coordinates the identification of situations, practices, or policies that pose risk of harm to Behavioral Health clients, employees, physicians, volunteers, or visitors and works to facilitate strategies to reduce those risks.
  • Coordinates Behavioral Health visitor and client incident reporting, review, and trending.
  • Reviews Behavioral Health incident reports daily, examining significant trends or issues and investigating as needed.
  • Assists Legal Department in Behavioral Health data trending, education, and consultation for risk analysis and loss prevention.
  • Reviews Behavioral Health medication errors/Adverse Events with Pharmacy and investigates as needed.
  • Coordinates Near Miss/Sentinel Event Reviews with Behavioral Health Administration, staff, and physicians.
  • Conducts Root Cause Analysis for al Near Misses/Sentinel Events .
  • Coordinates Behavioral Health response to Joint Commission Sentinel Event Alerts.
  • Conducts Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA) for at least one high-risk client care process per year related to Behavioral Health.
  • Participates in Behavioral Health committees as needed to assure that risk management/client safety issues are identified and/or resolved.
  • Assists in providing education to the Behavioral Health Medical Staff members, residents, and medical students on client safety and risk reduction strategies.
  • Reviews Behavioral Health policies and procedures to identify client safety and risk reduction strategies.
  • Participates in EH and SEMHC Env Safety Rounds to promote a safe environment for staff, visitors, and patients.
  • Participates in Disclosure communications with the client and/or their family.
  • Trends patient incident report data for reporting to the SEMHC Executive Committee.
  • Oversight of dissemination of updates regarding clinical and regulatory standards to appropriate staff members related to Behavioral Health.
  • Knowledge and application of ISDH, DMH, CMS, and Joint Commission standards.
  • Participant in accreditation, licensure, and regulatory visits involving Behavioral Health setting.
  • Develop and implement training programs and materials related to regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and monitor regulatory action plans in Behavioral Health setting.
  • Function as resource to support management team and staff of the clinics on accreditation and regulatory activities.
  • Collaborates directly with SEMHC Directors, CEO, and medical director to identify performance improvement and educational opportunities.
  • Prepares and presents in-services throughout the Behavioral Health System.
  • Acts as liaison between SEMHC staff, SEMHC medical director, and the Eskenazi Health Services Legal Department.
  • Active participant on SEMHC committees for quality improvement.
  • Active participant in the identification, review, and investigation of potential quality of care issues and areas of non-compliance with outcome measures and performance improvement goals throughout the Behavioral Health System.
  • Plans and performs an annual Suicide Risk Assessment on the inpatient psychiatric unit. Areas of risk are communicated to leadership.


Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in health care field (preferably Nursing). Master's degree preferred.
  • Six years of professional experience within Behavioral Health.
  • Working knowledge of computers and software applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver staff training programs.
